Endurance and lessons from the pilots on a heated Safari

24 março 2025

Real statements were only made at the end of the rally. During the rally, at the end of the special stages, the drivers sympathetically evaded questions, rambling on about various topics, but always with a smile on their lips. This is a form of protest, which ended after the Power Stage with more pleasant statements than usual, even after the constant pressure they were under throughout the Kenyan savannahs. It may be that the sanctions and fines imposed by the FIA for a few verbal slips will soon come to an end.

In what can be considered the toughest race on the calendar, the WRC drivers gave other important examples, such as working hard during the stretches to recover their cars. On surfaces that were too hard and treacherous, punctures were a constant throughout the 21 sections of the Safari, despite the effectiveness of the new Hankook tyres, which, despite punctures, sometimes allowed the teams to finish the stages. With greater differences than usual between all the competitors, the Kenyan Safari Rally only had two leaders (Evans and Tänak), with Elfyn Evans being the most effective, but also the most fortunate, an essential factor for winning a rally of these characteristics.

In the final standings, "gentleman driver" Jourdan Serderidis, a 61-year-old Greek, ended up resisting the harshness of the race, taking the Ford Puma Rally1 to 8th place overall, almost half an hour behind the winner, but second best for the M-Sport Ford WRT team in this Safari. Serderidis has been an essential support for the team, also supporting and encouraging gifted younger drivers who want to make a career in the WRC. The Greek enjoys driving the Ford Puma and helping to ensure that world rallying continues to attract attention.

The next challenge of the 2025 WRC will be on asphalt and will be held in the Canary Islands between 24 and 27 April. Elfyn Evans leads the world championship with 88 points, a considerable advantage over the 52 points held by defending champion Thierry Neuville and the 49 points scored by Ott Tänak.
