Analysis: Oliver Solberg surprised everyone and everything

Another promising youngster on the WRC scene.
22 julho 2025

Nobody would have thought that Oliver Solberg and Elliott Edmonson would triumph in Estonia on their first time driving a Rally1 car. But that's what happened, with Solberg giving a masterclass in driving the Toyota GR Yaris. The 23-year-old Swedish driver controlled the entire race, attacking at the right time, but also showing excellent handling when it was necessary to defend the lead of the rally. The team won 9 of the 20 timed sections, also triumphed on ‘super Sunday’ and was even third fastest on the Power Stage.

At the end, there was emotion in the eyes of Oliver and Elliott who, after taking control of the Rally2 category, went on to win the main WRC category. Tears from the navigator, but also from Oliver's mother and father, the well-known driver Petter Solberg, who also celebrated immense success more than two decades ago. Local driver Ott Tanak had to settle for second place, 25.2 seconds behind Solberg, but he still took the lead in the 2025 WRC with just one point ahead of Elfyn Evans. Toyota achieved its 100th WRC victory, but Hyundai put two drivers on the podium in Estonia, with defending champion Thierry Neuville finishing in 3rd place, helping Hyundai (347 points) close the gap to Toyota (399 points).
Oliver Solberg became the 3rd youngest driver to win a WRC race, after Rovanpera and Latvala, with a maturity well above average. However, and despite a fabulous result, the future is still uncertain for the Swedish driver in terms of being able to count on a top car in the Rally1 category, after leaving no doubt about his driving skills and his dominance in the WRC2 class. Now with Tanak at the helm, the 2025 WRC returns from 31 July to 3 August with the Rally of Finland
